Spanish Navy Minehunter SPS Turia ran aground

The Spanish Navy’s minehunter ‘Turia’ run aground in La Manga during the rescue efforts of the body of the pilot of the wrecked plane. During the rescue work for the plane that crashed yesterday in the Mediterranean Sea at the coast of La Manga, the Turia has been stranded about 150 meters from the beach, in an area where the depth is about 4 meters, and near of submerged rocks.

The ship has been damaged but the damage didn’t reach the fuel tanks.  A group of Navy divers is working in the area to try to minimize its effects and “save” the minesweeper.  Crew members have been evacuated.

The Navy ship has been stranded in front of the beach of Banco del Tabal, in the area of the Souk, in the place where a plane of the Air Force was damaged yesterday, for reasons that are still unknown.  The ship was part of the deployment dedicated to the recovery of the remains of that accident.

The “Turia” (M-34) is the fourth unit of the “Segura”-class minehunters built by Bazán in Cartagena.

She was launched on November 22nd 1999 and delivered to the Spanish Navy on October 16th 2000.
