Indian Navy commissioned the third Scorpene-class submarine INS Karanj in Mumbai on March 10th.
The ship was commissioned in presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired) VS Shekhawat who was the Commanding Officer of the earlier INS Karanj during the 1971 India-Pakistan War, an Indian Navy statement said.
Indian Navy has already inducted two submarines of the class named INS Kalvari and INS Khanderi.
The diesel-electric attack submarines have been built under Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL)’s Project-75 in collaboration with the French Naval Group.
A total of six submarines are to be built at the MDL. These were the Scorpene-class submarines ordered by India in 2005.
The fourth submarine, Vela, was launched into the water in May 2019 and the fifth, Vagir, in November 2020, and both are undergoing sea trials. The sixth, Vagsheer, is in an advanced stage of outfitting.
INS Karanj
INS Karanj is a diesel-electric attack submarine based on the Scorpène class, designed by French Naval Group and manufactured by Mazagon Dock Limited, an Indian shipyard in Mumbai. The ship was launched on 31 January 2018.
The submarine was delivered to the Indian Navy on 15 February 2021.
