%98 of the infected sailors from France’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier who tested positive for the coronavirus have recovered and been discharged from hospital or quarantine, the Captain Eric Lavault from the French Navy said on 4th May.

“There are only two sailors left in the hospital, including a petty officer in intensive care and a sailor under surveillance.” Captain Lavault added. 18 other sailors are still in quarantine in Toulon.

Defense Minister of France Florence Parly announced 2 weeks ago that 1,081 of the 2,300 people aboard the Charles de Gaulle and its escort vessels have tested positive so far — nearly half the overall personnel.

After some crew members showed coronavirus symptoms, the Charles de Gaulle (CDG) returned from Atlantic deployment 10 days earlier in last month.

The infection by the virus of half the personnel aboard CDG raised the questions focusing on how it got on board in the first place.

The French Navy now believes that the virus spread to the ship during a stay in the port city of Brest in mid-March. The ongoing investigations have not come to a conclusion yet.
