HENSOLDT UK is pleased to announce the supply of radar sensor suites consisting of Kelvin Hughes Mk11 S and X Band SharpEye radar systems to the South African Navy (SAN) for three Multi-Mission Inshore Patrol Vessels built by the Damen Shipyards Cape Town, South Africa, HENSOLDS announced with a press release.
These vessels, SAN MMIPV’s, will protect the coasts of the Republic of South Africa from such threats as piracy and illegal fishing. The SharpEye Mk11 range were an ideal choice for these demanding applications.
Adrian Pilbeam, Head of Sales, Maritime Surveillance stated “HENSOLDT UK are pleased to supply the South African Navy with further SharpEye radars to assist in the demanding operational tasks. This continues the longstanding relationship for the supply of radar sensors to OSI Maritime Systems for integration into their bridge systems.”
The SharpEye Mk11 radars are approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and are installed in conjunction with an OSI integrated navigation bridge system. The radars will provide a navigation and surface surveillance capability.
The solid-state SharpEye transceivers are located upmast in the carbon composite turning unit housing and bring additional benefits such as ease of installation and high reliability. The use of a direct drive motor system, rather than a traditional antenna rotator gearbox, reduces maintenance costs.

HENSOLDT UK recently announced the supply of Kelvin Hughes Mk11 X Band SharpEye navigation radars to two Polish Kormoran-II class minehunters.
Kelvin Hughes Mk11 SharpEye radar:
Kelvin Hughes Mk11 SharpEye is a pulse-Doppler radar for navigation and situational awareness. The ability to see smaller targets in clutter and at greater ranges increases the warship’s capability.
Kelvin Hughes has developed SharpEye to deliver superior radar performance and reliability. SharpEye is the world’s first affordable navigation and surface search pulse Doppler radar sensor offering high reliability, low cost of ownership and much-improved detection ranges, especially of small targets in clutter.
SharpEye is defining new standards in surveillance missions at sea, onshore and on land with transmit powers of up to 300W. It is used by navies, vessel traffic services, border agencies, coastal surveillance, other security agencies and critical infrastructure operators.
The radar I-band (X-band) and E/F-band (S-band) technology is a fully coherent radar providing situational awareness in all weather conditions and in high sea states.
